About the Shop

  • by Allison Everett

As the buyer for Fruitmarket’s bookshop, I endeavor to offer up a considered slice of the constantly shifting elements of contemporary culture. These moving pieces, (language, norms, politics, art, and values) are integral parts of how we connect to and think about the world, and influence how people conceive of concepts and objects - a major part of how art works. I aim to create an experiential space for you to discover a new book that sits in contemporary culture and art thoughtfully.

I also buy in a selection of considered gifts. Each season, I collect companies and makers for the shop, and work with them to bring products in. This season we have vegan, sustainably sourced soaps from a Glaswegian soap maker called Och, a selection of cards from a cast of new artists, Japanese Melamine cups and trays, aromatic, Hibi Japanese incense matches inspired by Awaji Island and Harima processes, ethically sourced and produced chocolate by Glasgow based chocolatier Bare Bones, and wxy's beautifully perfumed, sustainably produced candles. I aim to ensure all of our products are from companies and people who are invested in ethical and sustainable practises. All of our cards are either from the artist directly, or companies that pay their artists fairly.

Every purchase you make in the shop helps support the gallery, and allows Fruitmarket to continue to offer free exhibitions, events, and learning to the public.
