Candle made by Zsófia Jak
Zsófia Jak is an artist from Hungary, living and working in Scotland. She graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and design in 2017. Melankólia is Zsófia Jak's ceramics practice that focuses on functional objects like cups, mugs, and vases, as well as hand poured candles with custom scents.
She designs her pieces with intention so that each owner might find a moment of calm in their day. The scents she creates for her candles are often designed to evoke the memory of spaces.
Zsófia has designed a candle to evoke a memory of Fruitmarket. The ceramic vessel intended to replicate the capitals of the steel girder columns in the upper gallery. The hole detail is usually covered up, but occasionally revealed for specific artists during their shows. To design the scent for Fruitmarket Zsófia took parts of visiting Fruitmarket and blended them together to make a soft, woody and floral scent with an earthy, mineralic base. Jak brought in notes of paper, plaster, wood metal and geranium.
