Antunes Collection by Studio Katherine James
Sterling silver and rubber.
Fruitmarket has commissioned this bespoke jewellery line by Studio Katherine James in response to Leonor Antunes exhibition the apparent length of a floor area.
Katherine James is a Leeds-based artist known for her subversive chainmail technique. She creates sculptures and contemporary jewellery which liberate the aesthetic language of typically gendered materials.
The Antunes Collection is based on the idea of converting measurements from one material into another; the circumference of a ring becomes a length of chain. Each piece plays on the interaction between two materials with identical forms but opposite material characteristics (sterling silver and rubber) to which the same unconventional chainmail technique has been applied. This echoes Antunes’ reinterpreting of elements of modernist design and architecture through extending measurements and transposing materials.
