David Batchelor (b.1955, Dundee) makes drawings, paintings, sculptures and public commissions that celebrate and explore the possibilities of colour - in particular the man-made, petrochemical pigments that occupy our everyday urban environments. In their use of the ‘readymade’ object – giant balls of electrical flex; bristling orbs of disposable sunglasses; flowing chandeliers of detergent bottles – Batchelor’s sculptures often feel wryly humorous. However his two-dimensional paintings and drawings, made rapidly and in series, are more like proposals, or schematics, for sculptures that could never exist in reality: pure, unsupported colour hovering and teetering in space.
