Glasgow-based artist Jacqueline Donachie (b.1969, Glasgow) is a sculptor interested in the structures and platforms – both literal and figurative – that bring friends, family, communities, experts together, and allow them to participate in and navigate civic life.
This hand-gilded etching, Speedwork, refers to Donachie’s 2010 public commission of the same name at House for an Art Lover in Glasgow. The print also bears a close relationship to the artist’s ongoing series of works on paper titled Glimmer; hand-drawn studies of lampposts and CCTV cameras mounted on poles which have a particular anthropomorphic vulnerability to them. Railings or ramps are also objects in the urban landscape that might be invisible to the able-bodied but vital for those who experience disability.
