To celebrate his current exhibition Before Behind Between Above Below at Fruitmarket, part of our 50th Year programme, Martin Boyce has created a suite of three limited edition prints.
Each print is a 1:1 scale image of an instant ‘Instax’ photograph made by the artist of works in the exhibition. Printed on a softly shifting metallic paper and embossed, they have a distinct object-like quality
Photography and a cinematic sensibility - a time-based, lens-mediated way of looking at the world - has always been central to Boyce's practice. Instant photography has a particular immediacy to it, as the artist says:
Instant photos are extremely hit and miss but have a unique quality that captures a moment in a very particular way. I have tried photographing a number of different works with my Instax Mini camera but the first ones that really worked were the telephones, they became like portraits. The flash is very important and perhaps lend the image an oversaturated Warholian quality. In the Fruitmarket exhibition I tried a number of works but in the end the mask, Phantom Limb and the telephone worked.
As I began to think about the relationship between the three images I thought of how a landline telephone is really just a vessel, an inanimate object only active when conversation is passing through it. The mask is similar in the sense that its eyes are in fact the opposite, they are just holes in a surface, the mask speaks of the absence of a face, of eyes, of a body. Then there is the photographic work Phantom Limb. In the Instax image it appears as if an apparition has been captured in a fleeting moment, but what is a phantom if not the presence of something absent?
All Fruitmarket editions are made by the generosity of the artist and all proceeds go to supporting Fruitmarket’s creative programme.
