A little piece of Fruitmarket history and an artwork to hold in the palm of your hand. These compact mirrors were made by Karla Black (b.1972, Alexandria) to celebrate the new Fruitmarket’s first exhibition, Karla Black: Sculptures 2001–2021. Fruitmarket last worked with Black in 2011, when we presented her work for Scotland + Venice at the Venice Biennale, and Black was nominated for the Turner Prize that same year. As a domestic version of the artist’s mirror works, such as Looking Glass number 16, this speaks in Black’s distinctive visual language of pastel colours, and materials more commonly found in the chemist shop or makeup counter.
