Tania Kovats (b.1966, Brighton) makes drawings, sculpture, installations and large-scale, time-based projects that explore our experience and understanding of the sea, water, and
the environment. This delicate two-colour litho print was born out of a research period in the Galapagos, a place where the conflict between fragile ecosystems and human tourist activity is writ large. A single-use polythene carrier bag declaring ‘the pleasure of shopping’ illustrated with a seagull, a shark, a turtle and a seal – as a cultural artefact – serves as something of an emblem of consumerist attitudes towards the natural world.
