Tony Swain, (b.1967, Lisburn), one of the artists who represented Scotland in the 52nd Venice Biennale, is best known for his paintings that begin life as newspaper pages. The collaged newspaper elements of Swain’s work act as a sort of provocation; a starting point on which to build paintings which may expand into vast landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes populated with landmarks, structures and the signs of human activity, or collapse into intimate interiors all drawn together with passages of painterly abstraction. This limited edition screen print is closely related to the process by which the paintings are made, and also reintroduces into the surface the distinctive moiré and halftone pattern intrinsic to the newspaper printing process.
